Alentejo

South of the Tagus, the vast Alentejo plain has excellent conditions for wine production. The climate is dry, with very high temperatures during the summer; vines need watering to resist the excessive heat. Once directed to the production of wheat, there was an explosion of new producers in the 1980s, and new vineyards grew exponentially. Today, there is still a predominance of red grapes which meets the demands of a market that consumes more red wine from the hot regions.

The good natural conditions and the ease of cultivation as a result of favorable orography have given rise to a renewed interest from many investors, who have come from other areas of business and are interested in the planting, production and sale of wines from the Alentejo.

There are six cooperative cellars in the region – Portalegre, Borba, Redondo, Reguengos, Vidigueira and Granja. They currently produce well-formed, competitively priced wines, and as a result of technical innovation, the work undertaken at the winery nowadays is much more professional. Thus, there is increased demand from these cellars, both nationally and internationally.

The Alentejo clearly occupies the first place in the consumer’s choices. The work of bottling producers has contributed greatly to this image; they have been able to bring new generation wines to the market, combining traditional varieties – such as Aragonês, Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet and Alfrocheiro – with new varieties brought from other regions or even from abroad – Touriga Nacional, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon. White wines are enjoying increased demand and the Antão Vaz variety, which has always been present in good quality wines from Vidigueira, has become the most sought-after, usually to become part of a batch where Arinto is mandatory, seasoned with either Viognier, Chardonnay or small local varieties such as Perrum, Rabo de Ovelha and increasingly, Verdelho.

It is clearly the region in fashion, giving rise to smooth, elegant wines that are easy to drink while young. The production of white wines has grown a lot in recent years, as have rosé wines and while it can be said that reds still dominate, whites are growing, benefiting from increasingly early harvests that produce wine of good acidity and freshness. Many reds age very well and the tastings that we are doing show that from 10 to 20 years is a perfectly acceptable time horizon for these top-end wines.
