The new edition of the Portugal Wine Guide includes the special participation of João Paulo Martins, renowned Portuguese wine critic, who writes on the characteristics, qualities and performance of Portuguese wines, as well as introducing each wine region, with its history and particularities.
João Paulo Martins began his career as a journalist specialized in wines in 1989 and, in that capacity, has written for several publications, both in Portugal and abroad. He is currently on VINHO – Grandes Escolhas and has a column in the Expresso, Portugal’s most important and influential weekly newspaper, for several years.
He is also well known for his Vinhos de Portugal wine tasting notes, a referential wine guide for Portugal and Brazil which has been published for 21 consecutive years.
Besides these activities, João Paulo organizes wine tasting initiation courses and workshops on Portuguese wines in Brazil, Angola, Macau, Brussels and Hong Kong (sommeliers school). In 2013 he coordinated a panel on wine selection for Portuguese airline TAP. He is occasionally invited to be on the jury of the World Competition in Brussels and has also been on the judging panel of others, such as IWC and Decanter in London, South Africa, Brazil, Madrid, Düsseldorf and Chile.
João Paulo also published the book Tudo Sobre Vinho do Porto, in four languages, which was re-published in 2011 only in Portuguese and English, now with the name O Prazer do Vinho do Porto or in English The Pleasure of Port.
Together with portuguese chef Vitor Sobral, João Paulo published, in 2009, the book O Portugal de Hoje à Mesa, on Portuguese cuisine.
More recently, in 2015, João Paulo launched by WG Books The Pleasure of Port in Chinese becoming the first ever book fully devoted to Port Wine in full Chinese.
