The Wine Region of Lisboa

Lisboa wines need all the visibility they can get, which is why we spare no effort in finding occasions to introduce them to the consumers, in the knowledge that, whenever they are tasted, Lisboa wines gain new fans.

Until recently the region which now produces Lisboa wines was called Estremadura. Before that, almost twenty years ago, it was called Oeste. Neither of these names was a fortunate choice and Oeste became associated with a lack of quality, or bulk wine, sold in large quantities to markets that brought no added value to the product. Later Estremadura, a term with deep roots, never picked up speed and was easily mistaken for the eponymous Spanish province, which proved counterproductive.

The eventual addition of Colares, Carcavelos and Bucelas wines increased the variety and made it necessary to look for a common denominator, which was found in the term Lisboa. All these magnificent wines are produced in the vicinity of the Capital city, and have been described historically as being “wines of the Lisboa region”. Wellington famously offered King George III and the Prince Regent a gift of Carcavelos and Bucelas wines, which he called “Wines of Lisbon”. All these designations of origin are over 100 years old, proof of a steady course that has been maintained over the years.

With over 30,000 hectares of vines, this is one of the regions that makes a greater impact in terms of quality and variety of the wines it produces. Every year we certify about 20 million bottles, over half of which are exported to several European markets and others, such as Brazil, Canada and Angola. Exports are also picking up to China, including Hong Kong and Macau.

Recently we visited the Paula Rego museum in Cascais, also known as the Story House. During one of the inaugurations the artist, who only drinks sparkling wines, tasted and complimented a DOC Óbidos sparkling wine which we gave her, and which was a great success.

The Lisboa region is also represented by several Designations of Origin, such as Alenquer, Arruda, Torres Vedras, Lourinhã and Encostas d’Aire. The weather has not gotten in the way of any of the steps of production, and the 2011 wines are currently maturing. Soon the reds will be ready for tasting, and some of the whites have already hit the shelves.

There are many different varieties in this region, such as Touriga Nacional Trincadeira, Castelão, Alicante Bouschet, Sirah and many other reds. Among the whites the Arinto, Chardonnay, Fernão Pires and Rabo de Ovelha stand out.

We have many plans and programs to continue to improve and build on this rich heritage, so come pay us a visit!
