Dão wines: an introduction to Portuguese grape varieties

The Dão region is located in the interior of Portugal´s central districts and is the first demarcated region for non-liqueur wines in the country, having been established a century ago. The region boasts an exceptional terroir, with enviable soil and climate for producing wines, the Dão wines are born from vines which are protected by woods, spread out over small patches of land that have been lovingly toiled by generations of tireless and dedicated, families.

Aroma, elegance, ageing capacity and an excellent match for food are some of the renowned qualities of the Dão wines, which are made almost exclusively from native Portuguese varieties. The Dão is, as a matter of fact, an ideal place to get to know Portugal’s finest varieties. Dão is the birthplace of the famous Touriga Nacional (red), and the brilliant Encruzado (white). Whereas the former are velvety and floral, with a noble presence and a rare ageing capacity, the latter are seductive, have a balanced structure and a freshness and vibrant acidity which help them evolve.

Portugal’s opinion makers have already surrendered to the charms of Dão wines, and renowned international critics have realized that they are a secret still to be revealed. Everyone praises the difference of these wines in a globalized world in which tastes can tend to become too uniform. Now it is up to those of us who work with this region to introduce the world to the elegant maturity of Dão wines, capturing their unique characteristics and making them the number one choice, amongst friends, for the celebration of special occasions or simply to accompany a meal.
